The law of New Zealand is based upon the principles of parliamentary sovereignty, the rule of law and the separation of powers. Formerly a British colony, the New Zealand legal system is similar to and based upon the English legal system in that it has a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. The important differences are a reflection of the unique legal culture that has developed in New Zealand.
